How ChatGPT Decides Which Brand to Recommend

More of your customers are asking ChatGPT what to buy. When they do, ChatGPT acts like a careful shopper: it asks around, then it checks you out. You have to pass both to be recommended.

Reddit gets you on the list.

Your website gets you picked.

What Is Reddit, and Why Does ChatGPT Care?

Reddit is one of the biggest websites in the world. It's a giant collection of discussion boards where everyday people ask questions and share honest opinions: “What's the best running shoe for flat feet?” “Has anyone tried this brand?” Thousands of people answer from their own experience.

Because those answers come from real customers, not ads, ChatGPT reads Reddit constantly when someone asks what to buy. It's the closest thing the internet has to word of mouth.

How It Works

What Happens When a Customer Asks ChatGPT

  1. Step 1

    A shopper asks ChatGPT

"What's the best non-toxic activewear brand?"

  2. Reddit's job

    ChatGPT asks around

It reads what real people say on Reddit and in review articles, and writes down the names that keep coming up.

  3. Your website's job

    ChatGPT checks each name

It visits each brand's website to confirm the details: what they sell, the price, the proof.

  4. Step 4

    It recommends a few

The brands that passed both steps get named, often with a link straight to their site.

Two Jobs

Reddit's Role and Your Website's Role

Gets you on the list

Reddit

Think of it as word of mouth. It's the friend who says "you should look at these three brands."

What ChatGPT does there
Reads real conversations to decide which brands are worth considering at all.
If you're not there
You never make the list. It doesn't matter how good your product or website is: ChatGPT won't check out a brand nobody mentioned.
What it does for you
Your name comes up when buyers ask about your category. And when people ask ChatGPT "is this brand legit?", Reddit is often where the answer comes from.

Gets you picked

Your website

Think of it as your references. ChatGPT has heard your name; now it calls to check you're the real deal.

What ChatGPT does there
Visits your site to confirm what others said: your products, prices, certifications, where things are made, your return policy.
If the answers aren't there
ChatGPT mentions you with doubt, or recommends a competitor whose website answered the question clearly.
What it does for you
ChatGPT recommends you with confidence and links to you, so the buyer lands on your site already trusting you.
How They Fit Together

You Need Both. Here's Why.

Reddit without a strong website gets you mentioned but not chosen. A strong website without Reddit never gets looked at.

On Reddit + Strong website

Recommended

ChatGPT hears about you, checks you out, and sends buyers your way. This is the goal.

On Reddit + Weak website

Mentioned, not trusted

You make the list but can't close the deal. ChatGPT often picks a competitor it could verify.

Not on Reddit + Strong website

Never considered

A great website nobody mentions is a store with no sign out front. ChatGPT never gets to it.

Not on Reddit + Weak website

Invisible

Buyers asking ChatGPT about your category won't hear your name.

A Real Example

Two Similar Brands, Two Very Different Results

We asked ChatGPT for the best non-toxic activewear brands, over and over. Two brands sell very similar products.

Brand A

Recommended every time

  • People talked about it in the Reddit threads ChatGPT read.
  • Its website clearly listed the safety certifications ChatGPT went looking for.

Brand B

Never mentioned once

  • Nobody mentioned it in those Reddit threads, so it never made the list.
  • Its website said it was still “working toward” the key certification, so it would likely have lost the check too.

Brand B's prices were actually a little lower. It didn't lose on product. It lost because ChatGPT never heard about it and couldn't confirm it.

The Same Thing, Seen From the Other Side

We ran the same kind of test for two of our clients after we got them into the Reddit threads ChatGPT reads. We asked it the questions their buyers ask, then split the answers by whether it had read one of those threads first. Businesses are described by type only.

A company that sells exam prep for contractor licenses

48 of 78

answers named it when ChatGPT had read one of our threads

0 of 22

answers named it when it hadn't

100 answers to 10 buyer questions. On a second test, using 19 questions taken from the threads themselves, it went 41 of 88 with a thread and 1 of 25 without.

A painting, siding and gutter company in metro Atlanta

18 of 74

answers named it when ChatGPT had read one of our threads

0 of 26

answers named it when it hadn't

100 answers to 20 local questions. On the services where we had no threads yet, like roofing and decks, ChatGPT never named it.

Across both clients, ChatGPT named the brand without one of those threads once in 73 answers. Getting on the list is the step nothing else can skip.

What This Means for You

What We Do About It

The goal is simple: when a customer asks ChatGPT what to buy, your name comes up, ChatGPT speaks well of you, and it links them straight to your store.
