Why Reddit Decides Whether ChatGPT Recommends You
When your customers ask ChatGPT what to buy, it doesn't just guess. It reads what real people are saying, and the place it reads most is Reddit. If your brand isn't part of those conversations, ChatGPT usually won't bring you up.

What Is Reddit?
Reddit is a giant collection of discussion boards, one for almost every topic you can think of: running, skincare, dog training, home brewing. Everyday people ask questions and answer each other from their own experience: “What's the best running shoe for flat feet?” “Has anyone tried this brand?”
It's huge. About 130 million people use it every day and more than 500 million every week. And because the answers come from real customers rather than ads, it's the closest thing the internet has to word of mouth. That's exactly why AI tools trust it.
The AI Companies Pay to Read Reddit
The two biggest names in AI search have signed deals with Reddit for access to its conversations. The AI tools your customers use are built to read Reddit.
February 2024
Google signed a deal for access to Reddit's data to train and improve its AI. It was reported to be worth about $60 million a year.
May 2024
OpenAI
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, partnered with Reddit to bring real-time Reddit content into ChatGPT.
And it shows in the answers
Profound analyzed more than 4 billion citations from AI answer engines and found Reddit is the most-cited website overall: #1 on Perplexity and #2 on both ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Semrush, tracking 230,000 prompts, also found Reddit among ChatGPT's two most-cited websites.
Reddit's Three Jobs Inside ChatGPT
We recorded more than 5,000 ChatGPT searches to watch exactly how it decides which brands to recommend. Reddit does three different jobs.
Job 1
It decides who makes the list
When a shopper asks ChatGPT "what's the best ___?", ChatGPT reads Reddit to find out which brands real people keep recommending. If nobody mentions you there, you usually don't make the list, no matter how good your product is.
74% to 95%
of ChatGPT buying searches read Reddit
Job 2
It answers "is this brand legit?"
Before buying from a brand they don't know, people ask ChatGPT whether it's trustworthy. For those questions, Reddit stops being background reading and becomes the answer. What people say about you there is what ChatGPT repeats.

of reputation answers cite Reddit
Job 3
It puts your name in the answer, not the link
On "best ___" questions ChatGPT rarely links to Reddit itself. It uses Reddit to decide which names to mention, then links to the brands' own websites. Reddit earns you the mention; your website earns the click.

Same Products, Lower Prices, Never Mentioned
We asked ChatGPT for the best non-toxic activewear brands, over and over. Two brands sell very similar products.
Brand A · talked about on Reddit
Recommended every time
Brand B · not in those threads
Never mentioned once
Brand B's prices were actually a little lower. ChatGPT never recommended it because nobody in the conversations it read was talking about it.
When ChatGPT Reads the Threads, It Names the Brand
The activewear example shows a brand losing because it was never in the threads. These two show the other side. After we got each client into the Reddit conversations ChatGPT reads, we asked it the questions their buyers ask, 5 to 10 times each, and split the answers by whether it had read one of those threads first. Businesses are described by type only.

0 of 22
answers named it when it hadn't
- 100 answers to 10 buyer questions. Every answer that named the brand came after ChatGPT read one of our threads.
- One thread in a contractor community was read in 62 of 100 answers.
- On the one question where we had no thread, ChatGPT named it 0 of 10 times.
- Its own website showed up in 46 of 100 first searches: the threads put it on the list, the site gave ChatGPT the details to recommend it.

answers named it when it hadn't
- 100 answers to 20 local questions. 74 of them read one of our threads first.
- Gutter installation in its home city went 5 of 5. A commercial-painting question went 7 of 8.
- Roofing, porches and decks, where we had no threads, went 0 of 5 read and 0 of 5 named.
- When we limited ChatGPT to searching Reddit, it tied the brand to our thread in 16 of 20 cases.
Across both clients, ChatGPT named the brand without one of our threads once in 73 answers.
A Few Good Conversations Go a Long Way
A handful of threads carry the weight
AI engines lean on just 3 to 5 key Reddit communities for any given question. In one of our audits, a single Reddit thread was ChatGPT's main outside source on a business and was cited 31 times.
Good threads keep working for years
The average Reddit post that AI engines cite is about a year old. Unlike an ad, a helpful conversation keeps getting read long after it's posted.
It works across AI tools, not just ChatGPT
Reddit ranks at or near the top on Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. The same well-known threads show up for both ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.
ChatGPT doesn't go looking for it
Only about 1.6% of ChatGPT's searches include the word "Reddit." It shows up anyway because Reddit is all over the search results for buying questions.
The Honest Fine Print
- AI tools change how they work all the time. In September 2025, ChatGPT's use of Reddit dropped sharply for a few weeks before recovering, so exact percentages move.
- Studies disagree on Reddit's exact rank. Some put Wikipedia or YouTube ahead on certain tools. What every major study agrees on: Reddit is at or near the top.
- Reddit cuts both ways. AI engines quote negative threads about brands about as often as positive ones, which is why reputation matters as much as visibility.
How We Put Reddit to Work for Your Brand
Step 01
Find the conversations that count
We ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask and see exactly which Reddit threads and communities it reads for your category.
Step 02
Get your brand into them
We get your brand into those conversations, so when ChatGPT asks around, your name comes up.
Step 03
Watch your reputation
We track what's being said about you, because Reddit is what ChatGPT quotes when someone asks if you're legit.
Reddit gets you on ChatGPT's list. Your website is what gets you picked. See how the two fit together.
